Subaru Telescope Detects the Shadow of a Gas Cloud in an Ancient Proto-supercluster March 28, 2017

By using the Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope, a team led by researchers at Osaka Sangyo University succeeded in making the widest map of neutral hydrogen gas in the early universe (corresponding to a time about 11.5 billion years ago). They found that the neutral hydrogen gas widely spreads out across 160 million light-years in and around the proto-supercluster.

Saturn's Rings Viewed in the Mid-infrared February 23, 2017

A team of researchers has succeeded in measuring the brightnesses and temperatures of Saturn's rings using the mid-infrared images taken by the Subaru Telescope in 2008. The images are the highest resolution ground-based views ever made. They reveal that, at that time, the Cassini Division and the C ring were brighter than the other rings in the mid-infrared light and that the brightness contrast appeared to be the inverse of that seen in the visible light.

By using the Subaru Telescope, an international team led by Hiroshima University researcher has revealed a picture of the increasing fraction of massive star-forming galaxies in the distant universe. Massive star-forming galaxies about 5 billion years ago trace large-scale structure in the universe. About 3 billion years ago, massive star-forming galaxies are no longer apparent.
